Various methods of Medical Termination of Pregnancy are available to patients during the initial weeks of pregnancy. The earlier the termination of pregnancy is done, the safer is it for the woman. Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, abortion in India can be performed until the 20th week of pregnancy. If the pregnancy is earlier than seven weeks, the termination of pregnancy can be done with oral medication. The age of the pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last period. If you’re not sure how long you’ve been pregnant, you may need an ultrasound scan to confirm this.

During the first visit, a pregnancy test will be carried out, and the age of the pregnancy will be confirmed. Your clinical condition will be checked, and you will be checked for anaemia and any sexually transmitted diseases. If you are older than 18 years, you do not need anybody else to consent to the procedure; it is your decision. If medical termination of pregnancy is carried out with oral medication, you will be given detailed instructions about what to expect and when to seek urgent care if required.

Surgical methods of termination of pregnancy usually involve a suction evacuation or a dilatation and curettage (D & C), also known as a dilatation and evacuation. It is usually done under conscious sedation or a general anaesthetic.
